A few weeks after Chez Dré opened back in 2011, there had been continuous murmurs, musings and curiosity about its beautifully baked croissants and pastries. Its location is smack bang in the middle of the South Melbourne market buzz where fresh produce, coffee and the vibe of people’s general love for food is just beaming from every street corner. Chez Dré just happens to be one more reason to come explore this side of town. There’s a choice to sit in their elegant courtyard or indoors where there is a wide angle view of the kitchen and watch talented chefs produce beautifully presented dishes.
So back to the pastries…
The croissant itself is pure gold in colour. Crisp and flaky on the outside, with layers of buttery dough just melting in your mouth. You will always be pleasantly surprised with the ever changing fillings and flavours on offer (when we saw speculoos one week, we were sold) and it’s clear how much pride they take in the overall quality of their product. The same can be said for their cakes and macarons, vibrant in both colour and taste - you won’t run out of options.
Their cruffins in our opinion are the prettiest and one of the yummiest we’ve tasted. The raspberry-rose cruffin and the blueberry and yoghurt cruffin are light but packed with flavour. The place is always bustling and whether you’re after some breakfast or lunch or just a sweet take away, this cafe caters to it all. Bon ap’!
